Plastic or Real? Why Live Plants Transform an Aquarium

Dec 7, 2025Blog

When setting up a new tank, one of the first design choices you face is the greenery. While plastic or silk plants are colourful and maintenance-free, many hobbyists eventually make the switch to live plants.

But is it worth the extra effort? At South West Tropical & Marine, we believe that adding live flora to your tank isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s one of the best upgrades you can make for the health of your ecosystem.

Here is why you should consider “going green” in your aquarium.

1. Nature’s Filtration System

You likely already have a filter running, but live plants act as a powerful secondary filter. As they grow, they absorb chemicals like Ammonia and Nitrates—the very toxins that can harm your fish. Think of them as a natural buffer that helps keep your water chemistry stable between water changes.

2. The Battle Against Algae

It sounds contradictory, but adding plants is the best way to stop algae! Algae thrives on excess nutrients and light. Fast-growing live plants compete for these same resources. By out-competing the algae for food, your plants flourish while the algae starves, leaving you with cleaner glass and clearer water.

3. Happy, Stress-Free Fish

In the wild, fish use vegetation for shelter, breeding, and shade. While plastic plants provide cover, they can sometimes have sharp edges that damage delicate fins. Live plants are soft and natural, allowing shy species to hide and reducing stress levels across the entire community. A stress-free fish is a colourful fish!

“But aren’t they hard to keep?”

This is the biggest myth in the hobby! While some “aquascaping” plants need high-tech CO2 systems and intense lighting, many species are incredibly hardy.

Plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and Cryptocoryne require very little light and almost no special care. They are perfect for beginners who want the benefits of a planted tank without the hassle.
